5 shows not to miss in Stockholm

9 April 2025 Journal News

5 SHOWS is the Artissima twice-monthly feature that recommends 5 exhibitions not to be missed in various European cities, chosen from the viewpoint of curators and directors of important institutions familiar with the local context. A different way to find guidance in the discovery of contemporary art across borders, with a personal and always up-to-date perspective.

The seventh focus is on Stockholm, with a selection by Hendrik Folkerts, Curator of International Contemporary Art and Head of Exhibitions, Moderna Museet.

Here are the 5 exhibitions currently on view she has chosen for our readers:

Carola Grahn. Drick Drick
Liljevalchs

Up to 10.08.2025

In Drick Drick, Grahn transforms ordinary objects into compelling symbols of personal experience, social critique, and collective memory. An overflowing glass, a joik machine, brooms, and 17 engraved knives become the building blocks of large-scale, meticulously crafted installations that span the exhibition halls.

Nakba. Palestinian stories from 1948
Medelhavsmuseet

Ongoing

When the state of Israel was established in 1948, 750,000 Palestinians were driven into exile. An additional 130,000 fled to other places within the new state’s borders. Palestinians call this expulsion al-Nakba, the Catastrophe. For three years, journalist and author Bernt Hermele has collected stories from people affected by al-Nakba. Now, some of these stories are being highlighted in a small and intimate audio exhibition at the Mediterranean Museum.

Imagine an after
Tensta konsthall

Up to 21.04.2025

In the fall of 2024, Tensta konsthall invites a group of artists to an attempt to imagine a space for reflection on different ways forward in a time of escalating conflicts around the world; situations that constantly leave new ruins and the displacement of people in their wake. The exhibition approaches the question of what can be contained in an “after”. The hybrid cultures that inevitably emerge in the quest for a new existence often trigger processes of change that can be both painful and a matter of fact.

Nina Kintsurashvili, Lasha Kintsurashvili. Udabno
Konsthall C

Up to 08.06.2025 (opening: 25.04.2025)

What does it mean to inherit? To inherit the weight of history? To inherit an eye? To inherit a hand? Throughout history, painting traditions have been carried on through a practice of inheritance across generations, either through the guild, through apprenticeship or, as in this case, through the family. For the first time, artist Nina Kintsurashvili is joined by her father, Lasha Kintsurashvili, in an intimate, intergenerational presentation of painting works.
