Arte e spazio pubblico (MIC–Direzione Generale Creatività Contemporanea and Fondazione Scuola dei beni e delle attività culturali [eds.], Silvana Editoriale 2023) is the result of an important, ambitious project that began in 2021. It is a multi-phase study of the practices, policies, and strategies that go into the making of public art and of the artistic interventions held in public spaces. The initial phase of research, which was conducted by five teams of seventeen experts from the academic, artistic, and institutional worlds, was followed by a call for abstracts that collected 227 original submissions on the five macro-themes the experts had identified. The final results were shared in a five-day conference dedicated to the in-depth study of specific themes: Space, Temporality, Participation, and Commissioning.
The book conveys the state-of-the-art that has been reached on this topic. Contributions by more than 100 authors present a comparison of experiences throughout Italy and beyond, delineating complex actions both in terms of the subjects involved and of the design methods employed.
